Sixteen

“That’s Amelia’s call,” Beau told Steve, the contractor overseeing the restoration. He was a real pro—an expert in old movie houses and a buddy of the assistant director of The Searchers, who had convinced Steve to come down to Texas to take the job. Beau had been incredibly impressed with Steve’s work so far, but as capable as he was, there were some decisions Amelia had to be the one to make—such as whether they should keep the theater seats the way they were now or install stadium style seating.

“Isn’t she filming?” Steve wanted to know.

Beau nodded. “I’ll swing by the set and see if I can get an answer from her during a break.” He was frowning as he tapped the proposed blueprints, but inside he was smiling broadly.

Life for Beau Taylor had never been busier—what with the delicate balancing act he had to strike between being on set for the horses (and Amelia), and making sure the theater renovations were going as planned. It was exhausting work…and he had never felt so alive.

He felt more purposeful, more important, than he ever had before.

“What is she filming today?” Kevin asked breathlessly. “Do you know?”

As a matter of fact, Beau did. “The ending,” he told the two men, smiling proudly. He knew he didn’t have to say much else for them to understand what he meant.

“The door scene.” Steve sighed reverently. “That’s the kicker, ain’t it? But wait, I thought I heard that Joseph was planning to film it on the first day?”

“He was,” Beau confirmed. “But the weather that first week was just what he wanted for some other scenes, so he ended up tackling them first. Today’s the day, though, so I know exactly where she’ll be.”

“And you don’t mind heading back to the ranch to get this settled?”

“No, not at all.”

Truth be told, Beau was happy for an excuse to go there and watch the filming of the iconic scene. He just knew she was going to blow the doors off of it.

When he reached the ranch, he found the crew set up outside of cabin number twelve, which had been converted into the Jorgensen ranch house. A special lime wash had aged the log walls, and the expert application of chalk paint lent the distressed air necessary to convey the hardscrabble time period.

As Beau watched, Joseph called for places, and the AD signalled that they were rolling. The set quieted.

They were filming from the porch, using the natural frame of the doorway as the boundary for the shot. As Beau watched, Amelia—as Evelyn Edwards—slowly approached the cabin behind her niece and the others. The camera tracked in, capturing the expression on her face as she realized no one was turning around to include her—that there was no place there for her after all. Then she turned and stalked away.

“Cut!” Joseph called.

Beau let out a long, shaky breath. Without saying a word, Amelia had captured everything that was expressed in that scene and more. It was a
